Historical East / West Maroon Ridge Trails

Historical East / West Maroon Ridge Trails

This project is designed to retrace the trails used historically by the enslaved Marooned habitants. Historical signage will be used to tell their stories. Drop-down trails will connect with locations of historical importance as told from the perspective of the indigenous people. The Department of Agriculture has been purchasing Heritage Lands along the Maroon Ridge in coordination with TVIL in the Northwest region of St. Croix as well as on the South Shore of the Island. These properties are set aside for Park and Conservation and can be utilized as Greens Spaces for Trails. Other properties are owned by various government entities such as the GERS on the East End as well as the Housing Finance Authority. With easements across these properties, along with existing roadways a Historical Maroon Ridge Trail can be created. This Ridge Trail would support future generations during a 400-yr. flood and Tsunami Events as per climate change reports. This segment would feature ridge trails on both the West and East ends of the Island.

Collaborating partners for this segment will be the DPW, DPNR, Dept. of Agriculture, HFA, GERS, TVIL, SUCCEED, CHANT, other land owners and homeowners’ associations and residents.
