MAY 18, 2019 HEALTH & WELLNESS EXPO

VITAL seized the opportunity to update the community regarding progress made with the pathways, trails and parks initiative. The information has been compiled and documented in the recently printed pamphlet outlining the results of the Walkability Map Survey complements of the Walkability Institute of the VI. A booth was set up during the Health & Wellness Expo at Sunny Isles Theater complete with printed information and updated pathway concept map. Alma Winkfield was able to update attendees regarding the work being done to include the Multi-Use Pathways to the Northside Road project. This road segment is in the design phase for extensive road improvements by the Dept. of Public Works. In February the Commissioner of Public Works, Nelson Petty Jr. reviewed VITAL’s work and added pathway concepts to 4 major road projects. The Northside Road will be the first project to be released for construction within a few months. This working partnership will result in the best possible pedestrian supported infrastructure for the road, taking into consideration the needs of all users. VITAL is working diligently to advance walkability options which includes walking, biking and public transportation. VITAL is also partnering with CHANT, The Christiansted Community Alliance and the St. Croix Foundation to write grants to secure technical assistance from “Smart Growth America”. This support will be directed to improve walkability in the two Historical Towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted.
