Community Celebrates the Holidays with Free Tree Giveaway and Festive Walk
On December 14, 2025, the Virgin Islands Trail Alliance welcomed community members to the Christiansted Government Parking Lot for a morning of holiday cheer, environmental stewardship, and outdoor recreation during its Free Tree Giveaway and 4-Mile Holiday Walk.
Throughout the morning, approximately 100 fruit and native trees were distributed free of charge to residents. Tree varieties included mammee apple, jackfruit, sea grape, acerola cherry, cacao, and bell apple. Participants received tree care instructions and were encouraged to plant and care for their new trees at home, helping expand the territory's tree canopy and strengthen local food security.
At the same time, walkers gathered for a festive 4-mile community walk led by Stephen Cohen and Esther Sweeney of the St. Croix Hiking Association. The route began at the historic Baobab Tree in Christiansted and took participants along the waterfront, through Altona Lagoon, to the Storytelling Circle at Canegata Recreational Center, and up to the Christiansted Bypass Overlook before returning to town.
Along the route, participants enjoyed scenic views, fellowship, and several community spaces enhanced by VITAL, including overlooks and seating areas that provide opportunities for rest, reflection, and connection with nature.
The event highlighted VITAL's ongoing mission to connect communities through trails, green spaces, tree planting, and outdoor recreation. By combining environmental action with healthy outdoor activity, the event offered residents a meaningful way to celebrate the holiday season while investing in the future of St. Croix.
VITAL extends its thanks to all volunteers, participants, and partners who helped make the event a success.
